One System Not Five Kingdoms

We like to call it "the education system", singular, as if it's one thing with one purpose pulling in one direction. It isn't. It's five separate kingdoms with five separate flags, five separate languages and a deep, unspoken suspicion of one another. Early years, primary, secondary, further education and higher education. Each one walled off, each one quietly convinced the others are doing it wrong, and a child posted between them like a parcel that loses something every time it crosses a border.
And then we act surprised when kids fall off a cliff at every transition.
Everyone Hoarding Their Own Treasure
Every sector has already cracked something the others are desperate for, and not one of them is sharing anywhere near enough.
Early years understands how humans actually learn. Through play, through doing, through failing and having another go and talking it through. A decent reception teacher knows more about real learning than most of us manage in a thirty year career. And we bin the lot the second a child hits Year One, as if exploration has an expiry date.
Universities are sitting on mountains of research about how learning works, almost none of which ever reaches a knackered teacher in a form they can actually use. FE has been quietly nailing blended and applied learning for years, a genuine sleeping giant, and nobody upstream is listening. Primary, secondary, college, university, all of them solving the same bloody problems behind their own walls and refusing to pass the answers over.
It's hoarding dressed up as standards.
The Baton Nobody Passes
We treat education like a relay race where nobody actually hands over the baton. They just lob it over the wall and leg it. The handovers, the moments a young person moves from one sector to the next, are precisely where we lose people. Their story doesn't travel with them. It gets rebuilt from scratch at every gate by someone who's never met them.
The pandemic ripped the curtain back on how far apart these worlds really are. Higher education pivoted online in a weekend because the kit and the mindset were already there. Primary schools were left scrambling, because technically they were on a different planet. Same "system". Wildly different realities. That gap didn't appear overnight, and it won't close while we keep pretending the sectors are separate species.
It's Not a One Way Street
The lazy assumption is that wisdom trickles down from the dreaming spires to the infants. Total bollocks. Block teaching? Universities nicked that from schools. Good ideas move in every direction the moment we let them, up and down and sideways. A connected system isn't higher education telling everyone else what to do. It's a relationship, and in any relationship worth having, you learn from each other.
The fix isn't another reform. It isn't another review that bolts more content onto an already buckling curriculum. It's connection.
Picture one shared spine running all the way from early years to university. Regional, not dictated from a desk in Whitehall. A common data and tech backbone so a young person's learning travels with them instead of being reinvented at every threshold. Teachers across every sector actually in the same room, swapping what works, stealing each other's best ideas without a flicker of shame.
This isn't a giant leap by a heroic few. It's a thousand small steps, all of us moving one pace forward together. That's how it gets done.
Five Things We Need to Believe
1. Stop calling it a system until it behaves like one. Five sectors with five rulebooks, five funding streams and five egos isn't a system. It's a turf war with a shared logo.
2. Every sector is brilliant at something the others need. Early years owns play. FE owns applied learning. Universities own research. Hoarding any of it helps nobody.
3. Learning flows in every direction. The good stuff doesn't only trickle down from the top. The best ideas travel up and sideways the instant we open the gates.
4. Fix the handovers or keep losing kids. The cracks between sectors are where young people quietly disappear. Joined up beats world class but disconnected every single time.
5. Build the backbone and take the small steps. One connected spine, shared data, teachers talking across the borders. Not one giant leap by a few, but one step forward by all of us.
We've spent decades perfecting each box and almost no time on the joins between them. That's the whole tragedy in a single sentence. A child doesn't experience primary, then secondary, then college, then university as separate chapters. They experience one life, one long arc of learning, and we keep snapping it into pieces and handing the pieces to strangers. The most dangerous thing anyone in education says is "we don't do it like that here", because it's the sound of another wall going up. So let's knock a few down. Not a merger, not a takeover, not another restructure that shuffles the same tired deckchairs. Just sectors that talk to each other, learn from each other and finally start running as one. Our kids get one journey through this thing. The very least we can do is stop making them scale a wall every few years.
