The Death of the Networking Event
Most traditional networking events are the educational equivalent of speed dating, except everyone's trying to look impressive rather than find a genuine connection. They're transactional, superficial, and rarely lead to meaningful change.
What we need instead are what we might call "growth collectives" – small, committed groups of leaders who meet regularly with the explicit goal of supporting each other's development. These aren't talking shops or moaning sessions; they're action-focused communities where leaders challenge and champion each other.
In these collectives, leaders can:
- Bring real challenges and receive honest feedback
- Test ideas before implementing them across their organisations
- Celebrate successes without fear of seeming boastful
- Share failures without shame, turning them into learning opportunities
- Hold each other accountable for committed actions
The magic happens when these spaces become regular fixtures in leaders' calendars – not the first thing to be cancelled when Ofsted calls or a crisis hits, but protected time seen as essential to effective leadership.
